When it comes to radiologist staffing, it is getting more challenging to appropriately staff with the full breadth and depth of radiology expertise needed to support all modalities and physician specialties. Radiology staffing options that are available include: on-site full time radiologists, local group practice contracts, locum tenens, subspecialty teleradiology and traditional night time teleradiology service providers. A single staffing model just doesn’t adequately support physician and patient needs anymore. Imaging facilities are using a blend of on-site and virtual staffing models to get the right mix of general and subspecialty interpretation expertise to ensure physician satisfaction, increased referrals, improved patient outcomes, mitigation of malpractice exposure, and ability to support new revenue streams as a result of high end modality purchases.

The traditional model of contracting exclusively with a single radiologist or a local group of radiologists just doesn’t adequately support referring physician and patient needs anymore. Teleradiology is a proven and growing resource solution not only for supporting nighttime preliminary reads but also for daytime, final general and subspecialty interpretations.
As imaging facilities combat reimbursement decreases, competitive pressures and staffing challenges, teleradiology utilization will likely increase either as a substitute or a compliment to existing on-site radiology coverage or as a means to improve competitive differentiation with subspecialty radiology access.

There’s practically nothing about the world of healthcare today that isn’t undergoing rapid change, and that certainly extends to the practice and business of radiology. The value of providing subspecialty expertise is fast becoming widely adopted as a competitive advantage resulting in high quality reports, increased physician satisfaction, improved patient outcomes, and increased referrals. Imaging center administrators and owners must understand how subspecialty expertise will shape their practices going forward as they build their business, operations, staffing, and marketing plans.
